Driving around the neighbourhood to look at Christmas lights has been a tradition in my boyfriend’s family since he and his brothers were really young. He took me out to Niagara-on-The-Lake last December to look at Christmas lights together, and it was such a gorgeous experience that I think everyone needs to try and head out there at least once this December.
You can drive down any of the streets in the region to be amazed at the stunning displays people put up for the holiday season. From Niagara Falls to Niagara-on-The-Lake, every road between the two regions is full of houses that are lit up with all the colours of the rainbow. My favourite home’s display is on York Street, designed by Don the Caretaker. It’s such a magical display full of reindeer, lights, and colour! You can see the house from so far away that the property acts as a beacon drawing people to it!
But really, even if you don’t visit Don’s home (where you are encouraged to get out and admire the displays outside of your car!), you’ll be amazed at the amount of effort that people put into their Christmas decorations. Everything is over the top, but it’s done so tastefully that it’s still elegant and gorgeous. I’d never felt so festive before in my life, and I’m sure you’ll appreciate the lights when you head out too. It’s one of Niagara’s best-kept secrets, and something locals of the GTA and Niagara do every year, so now you know about it and can check out Niagara-on-The-Lake’s Christmas lights, too!
